How they work

One cost dataset behind all twelve calculators

Every calculator on this site reads the same data: one file of national installed costs per project, one calculation module on top of it. The cost guides read that module at publication and print their tables; the calculators read it in your browser and let you move the inputs. Neither can contradict the other, because there is nothing else to read.

Each tool asks only what its trade actually prices by: roof area for roofing, openings for windows, tons for HVAC, fixtures for a repipe. None of them asks where you live, and none of them asks who you are.

  • National brackets, stated as ranges, never as a false-precision single number.
  • A breakdown with every result: materials against labor, and what each add-on contributes.
  • No location input. Regional variation is covered by one indicative table in each cost guide, not by pretending to know your zip code.
  • No email gate, no phone field, no callback. Anything on this site that looks like a lead form is a bug.

Using them well

What a national cost bracket is for

A calculator cannot see your house, and these do not pretend to. What a national bracket does is place any bid you receive: comfortably inside it, suspiciously under it, or above it with reasons the contractor should be able to name.

Use the tool for your project before the first estimate arrives, keep the breakdown, and ask each bidder about the line items that moved your number. The reader who knows what tear-off or a panel upgrade typically costs is a different customer, and gets quoted like one.

Each calculator’s page states what it cannot know about your specific job. Read that section before trusting any number, here or anywhere else.
