Bathroom Remodel costs, scopes and planning guides
The smallest room in the house and the most expensive per square foot, because everything in it is either plumbed, waterproofed or both.

What a bathroom remodel costs
A full bathroom remodel runs $7,000 – $30,000, and the number turns on one question before any other: does the toilet, the tub or the shower drain move?
Bathrooms carry more trades per square foot than any other room. Demolition, rough plumbing, electrical, framing, waterproofing, tile, fixtures, glass and paint all land in a space smaller than most bedrooms, and each one waits on the last. That density is why a bathroom costs what it does, and why the schedule slips when a single trade is late.
This cluster is organised around scope, because scope is what separates a refresh from a rebuild. Every figure comes from the same national dataset the calculators use, and nothing here asks for your phone number.
What moves the price of a bathroom remodel
$7,000 $30,000
Full bathroom remodelEvery bathroom quote moves on:
- Scope; a cosmetic refresh against a room taken to the studs
- Bathroom area, from a 30 sq. ft. powder room to a 100 sq. ft. primary
- Whether any drain moves, which is the single biggest lever
- How much of the room is tiled, and in what format
Figures on this page are indicative national brackets, not quotes. Your number depends on the size, complexity and condition of the job itself, and on what local crews are charging when you buy. Use them to judge a bid, not to replace one.
What each bathroom remodel scope costs
| Scope | Installed cost per sq. ft. of bathroom | Lifespan | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cosmetic refresh | $170 – $220 | 10 – 15 years | Vanity, toilet, faucets, mirror, lighting and paint, with the floor tile if it is tired. No wall opens and no drain moves. |
| Mid-range remodel | $290 – $380 | 15 – 25 years | Everything out to the studs and back in the same places: new tub or shower, tile, vanity, toilet, floor and ventilation. What most American bathroom remodels are. |
| Upscale remodel | $550 – $715 | 20 – 30 years | Stone or large-format tile, a curbless shower with a linear drain, a double vanity and specified fixtures. The waterproofing detail is what you are paying for, and it is the part nobody sees. |
| Layout change | $380 – $650 | 20 – 30 years | Moving the toilet, the tub or the shower. Waste lines run in the floor at a fixed fall, so relocating a drain means opening the ceiling below or the slab underneath. |
Installed cost covers the trades and finishes for the scope named, in an existing bathroom, at the 50 sq. ft. size a standard American full bath runs. Moving a fixture, converting a tub to a walk-in shower and tiling floor to ceiling are priced on top; the cost guide sets out what each adds.
How Home Palais reads a bathroom quote
Waterproofing is the only line item you will never see again and the only one that decides whether the room lasts twenty years
Bathroom questions, answered
Why is a bathroom so expensive for its size?
Because the price follows the trades, not the floor area. A 50 sq. ft. bathroom needs the same plumber, electrician, framer, waterproofer and tile setter as a room three times the size, and each of them has to finish before the next can start. Spreading that over fewer square feet is what produces the rate.
How much does moving the toilet cost?
Enough that it deserves its own decision. Supply lines are easy to reroute; the waste line is not. It runs through the floor structure at a fixed fall, so relocating it means opening the ceiling below or cutting a slab, and it typically adds 10 to 35 percent to a remodel that would otherwise be predictable.
How long does a bathroom remodel take?
Two to four weeks for a mid-range job in the existing footprint, with the room unusable for most of it. Tile alone takes several days because the setting bed, the tile and the grout each have to cure, and no schedule shortens that.
Is a walk-in shower worth it over a tub?
It depends on which bathroom. In a primary bath it is usually the better room and it ages well. In the only full bath in the house, removing the last tub can cost you at resale, because buyers with small children look for one.
Do I need a permit?
For a cosmetic refresh where nothing moves, usually not. The moment plumbing is rerouted, a circuit is added or a wall opens, yes, and in most jurisdictions the inspection is the only independent check that the waterproofing behind the tile was done correctly.
The calculator prices bathrooms per square foot on the same national data as every guide on this page; no phone number, no lead form.
