The part of the lot being worked on, not the lot itself. A front-yard refresh is often 400 to 800 sq. ft.; a back yard taken on in one pass runs 1,000 to 3,000. Lawn you are keeping as it is does not count.

Add-ons the bid will carry

Indicative multipliers only. The spread inside a region is often wider than the spread between regions.

How it works

Where this landscaping cost calculator gets its numbers

One dataset holds the installed cost of each landscaping scope per square foot, how long its result typically serves, and the share of that cost which is material rather than labor. One calculation module reads it, and every landscaping figure on this site comes out of that module: the cost guide tables and this calculator.

Price the area you are actually working, not the lot. A front-yard refresh is often 400 to 800 sq. ft.; a back yard taken on in one pass runs 1,000 to 3,000. Lawn you are keeping as it is does not count, and drawing that boundary honestly is most of the budgeting.

  • Each scope prices its full basket, from softscape planting to hardscape construction, per square foot worked.
  • A finish level selects a slice of that scope’s own range: plant maturity, paver grade, materials.
  • Add-ons are a share of the base cost: grading and drainage, irrigation, a retaining wall, tree removal, lighting.
  • Totals are rounded, because outdoor work is bid by the crew-day more than by the yard of mulch.

What it cannot know

What this landscaping cost calculator does not know

Every figure here is a national bracket per square foot worked. Land is the one input that is different on every single job.

Your dirt and your slope
Clay that drains nowhere, rock a foot down, a grade that sheds water at the foundation. Site conditions decide machine time, and machine time is where landscaping budgets go to die. The grading add-on prices the typical case, not a hillside.
What is under the surface
Utility lines, old stumps, an irrigation system nobody mapped, roots from the neighbor’s maple. Call 811 before anyone digs; it is free, it is the law in most states, and it is the cheapest part of the whole project.
Your climate and your water
Plant palettes, irrigation needs and the working season all follow climate. The dataset is national; whether a planting thrives is decided by your zone, your soil and your water bill, not by any bracket.
Permits and setbacks
Retaining walls above a few feet, drainage changes and front-yard structures trigger permits in many jurisdictions, and HOA rules ride on top. The add-on prices paperwork that exists; finding out what applies is a phone call only you can make.

Using it well

How to use the estimate against a landscaping quote

Landscaping quotes range from a mowing crew’s side job to a design-build contract, and they are not the same product. Decide which one you are buying before comparing numbers against this page.

A bid well below the range is usually undersized plants, no soil preparation and no warranty on what dies. A bid above it should be able to walk the yard with you and point at the money: drainage, walls, mature stock, lighting.

Ask every bidder what happens to plants that fail in the first year, who calls in the utility locate, and where the water goes when it rains. The third question is the one that separates a planting crew from a landscape contractor.

For reference

Every landscaping scope the calculator prices

The bands the calculator runs on, per square foot of the area actually being worked on.

Scope Installed cost per square foot, installed Lifespan Who it suits
Lawn and planting $5 – $10 5 – 15 years Soil prep, sod or seed, beds, shrubs, trees, mulch and edging. Nothing is built, so nothing needs a footing or a permit.
Planting with a patio $8 – $14 10 – 20 years The common job: planting plus one built element, usually a patio or a walkway. What most American yards actually get.
Hardscape-led $15 – $25 25 – 50 years Patios, walkways, steps and walls carrying the design. The excavation and the compacted base are the job; the paver on top is the cheap part.
Full design-build $25 – $40 20 – 40 years A drawn plan built in one pass: grading, drainage, irrigation, lighting, stone and mature planting. Priced as a project, not a list of tasks.

On a slope, retaining walls are priced separately and end up dominating everything else.

This calculator returns indicative national brackets, not a quote. Your number depends on your site’s slope, soil and access, on plant and material selections and on your local market. Use it to judge a bid, not to replace one.
