Price your repipe
Where this plumbing cost calculator gets its numbers
One dataset holds the installed cost of each pipe material per fixture served, its expected service life, and the share of that cost which is product rather than labor. One calculation module reads it, and every plumbing figure on this site comes out of that module: the cost guide tables and this calculator.
The tool prices by the fixture because that is how repipes are quoted. Count every point the supply lines end at: each sink, toilet, tub, shower, washing machine, dishwasher, ice maker, hose bib and the water heater. A three-bedroom house with two bathrooms usually lands between 10 and 14.
- Installed cost covers pipe, fittings and labor for the supply system, per fixture served.
- A quality tier selects a slice of that material’s own range: pipe wall, fitting system, manifold versus branch layout.
- Add-ons are a share of the base cost: drywall repair, slab or crawl-space access, a new water main or a water heater swap ride on the same job, and they are priced here the way plumbers price them.
- Totals are rounded to the nearest hundred dollars.
What this plumbing cost calculator does not know
Every figure here is a national bracket per fixture. What no calculator can see is where your pipes actually run.
- How your house is built
- Pipes in an open crawl space repipe in days; pipes under a slab or behind plaster repipe through the walls and the bill. The access add-ons cover the usual cases, but only a plumber in the house can say which one you are.
- The drains
- This tool prices the supply side. Cast-iron drain stacks from the same era often need work too, and finding that out mid-repipe is common. A camera inspection before quoting is cheap insurance.
- How much wall comes open
- A repipe is also a drywall job. The repair add-on covers patching; repainting whole rooms afterward is on you, and worth budgeting before rather than after.
- Your water
- Aggressive water chemistry shortens copper’s life and argues for PEX in some regions. The dataset carries national lifespans; your utility’s water quality report is the local correction.
How to use the estimate against a repipe quote
A repipe is disruptive, so the temptation is to take the first bid that promises a short job. The bracket here is what the work costs when it is done properly, permits and patching included.
A bid well below the range is usually a repipe without permits or without wall repair, and both come due later: the first at sale time, the second the week the crew leaves. A bid above it should name the access problem that justifies it.
Ask every bidder whether the number includes permits, inspection and drywall patching, and how many days the water is off. Those answers separate a repipe from a rough-in left behind.
Every repipe material the calculator prices
The bands the calculator runs on, per fixture, on a run the plumber can reach.
| Material | Installed cost per fixture, installed | Lifespan | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| PEX, trunk and branch | $250 – $700 | 40 – 50 years | Flexible tubing pulled through the existing routes, which is why it is the cheapest repipe: fewer holes, fewer hours, less drywall. |
| PEX, home-run manifold | $350 – $900 | 40 – 50 years | One dedicated line per fixture from a central manifold. More tubing, fewer joints in the walls, and every fixture shuts off on its own. |
| CPVC | $300 – $850 | 30 – 50 years | Rigid plastic, solvent-welded. Cheap and common in the South, brittle with age, and unforgiving of a hard knock in a cold crawl space. |
| Copper | $450 – $1,300 | 50 – 70 years | Soldered joint by joint, and priced accordingly. It outlasts everything here, tolerates heat, and fails early where the water is aggressive. |
Opening a wall or a slab to reach the run is priced on top, and it decides whether you can stay in the house.
This calculator returns indicative national brackets, not a quote. Your number depends on how the house is built, what the walls hide and what local plumbers are charging when you buy. Use it to judge a bid, not to replace one.
